What do you do when you're unhappy with the loneliness and tedium of the programming world? Easy. You quit, you find what you're happy with, and go do that.
That was Geoff Chasin's strategy, and it worked for him. After graduating from Cornell with a degree in Mathematics, after working in research and development at Digital Equipment in Maynard, Massachusetts, after designing a robotics file system in MicroPower Pascal, Geoff decided that he wanted a more social, people-oriented career, so he left the programming world forever, and went off in a new direction: trucking.
For some, not an obvious choice, but for Geoff, perfect. As the owner/driver of a delivery and home moving service, he found professional openings and opportunities in the field that appealed to him. A good, local trucking service with a polished image in New England would get repeat business both from customers and retailers. In 1989 Chasin bought a small storage and delivery service, the New England Retail Express, with the help of a partner. NERE is a moving and storage service, often acting as a subcontractor for chains such as Sears, delivering appliances to different areas all over New England. They have offices in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, and New Jersey. With Chasin' s help, the NERE has expanded in value from $2 million base in 1990 to $20 million today.
But Geoff didn't stop there. In 1992, Chasin and a partner bought Dial-A-Mattress, a tele-retailer franchise in durable bedding, for $800 from its parent company 1-800-Mattress.
This was a bold move. Selling mattresses over the phone to people who had never tested them might seem professionally suicidal. But Geoff had two advantages. First, the mattresses he was selling were from reputable sources, such as Serta and King Koil, and the second, after the Internet took hold a few years later, was the use of a website, www.mattress.com.
The web has made all the difference. At mattress.com a customer finds a user-friendly, intuitive approach to buying not only mattresses (and have your old one removed at delivery!) but also bedroom furniture, children's furniture, and futons.
Both the NERE and mattress.com support dozens of local and national charities, and both have won the BBB's Torch of Excellence Award.
